Fort of A’Famosa – Guardian of Malacca by Portuguese

When Malacca colonised by Portuguese in 1511 by Afonso de Albuquerque command. , the first defence they built is A’Famosa Fortress.  A fortress that encircled St Paul hill (originally known as Malacca Hill) which guard the Malacca river and the Malacca Straits line from their enemies.

According to my primary school teacher, the fort only use egg-white and egg-shell to ‘glue’ up all the bricks and stones (I can’t found any information about the truth about this).

In 1641, after Dutch drove Portuguese out from Malacca, they destroyed almost all the building inside the fort including the fort itself.  Luckily, one of the gate is survived and remain until now – A’Famosa (Porta de Santiago).
