Tourist love Jonker Walk, Malacca

Honestly, I really not impressed by Malacca’s Jonker Walk.  WHY ?  Too commercialized, it loose her original ‘taste’ when local Government promote it as tourist center.  Jonker Walk is just a distance walk from Stadthuys(just across a bridge at Stadthuys)

Jonker Walk

Jonker Walk (Jonker Street) literally translated as “Second Class Gentlemen” in Dutch, it is located at Jalan Hang Jebat(this name had been renamed so many times, and finally Jalan Hang Jebat is chosen and used until now) running parallel with Heeren Street.  The famous  Jonker Street is reputed to be one of the best places to hunt and bargain antiques.  Many authentic artifacts and relic can be found in some shops.

The street is closed and turned into pedestrian during weekend from Friday evening till Sunday night to facilitate the operation of Jonker Walk.  At that time you can see lots of mobile stalls lines up the street offering various type of products, from traditional foods, arts and crafts.  You also can see many antiques, souvenirs here.  Prices is reasonable and it can be bargain.

Few Chinese clubs and associations are also can be found along Jonker Walk and it is open to public.

Like I say from the beginning, I’m not impressed so much about Jonker Walk.  See the photos below,

When every good foods is commercialized, it will become expensive and people only remember the ‘brand’ but forgot the original taste.

Just want to declare here, putting these photos doesn’t mean their foods are not nice.  I just don’t agree with the way ‘they’ manipulate the name of ‘Malacca Chicken Rice Ball’.  If you really want to taste the original Chicken Rice Ball, try the one without fancy fancy decoration shop which near to the bridge(Sorry, I can’t give the shop’s name here, because it didn’t give me advertising fees).

There will be very crowded in the evening (20:00 – 23:00), specially during holiday season.  You can see so many people jamming in Jonker Walk, and some times there will be a street performances.

Take your time, and enjoy the environment of this famous Jonker Walk.
